Aquatic Resources in the Nature Conservancy Portion of Silver Creek
T.C. Bjornn L.J Francis 1979
This is a summary of the work done in
1979. The question they were asking in the survey was whether the
stream had changed since 1977. They did an aquatic macrophyte study and
electroshocking. There are several repeatable vegetation transects and
electroshocking sites. There is a pretty clear map of the areas
surveyed. There were 5 electroshocking sites: At Grove and Stocker
confluence, under the old wood bridge, upstream from the visitor center
(NZMS site), downstream of the visitor center near the beaver dam, and
before Loving creek enters Silver Creek. Shocking sites were Grove
creek confluence, under the old wood footbridge, the cabin site, the
beaver island site, and before Loving creek enters Silver Creek.
They found: in 1979 there were 3 x as
many fish starting their second summer as there were in 1977, Age 2 and
older were 1.6 x as abundant as in 1977,
In 1977: Rainbows age 2+=
58 Brook age 1 += 2 Whitefish age 1+ 175 and in 1979: Rainbows age
2+=91 Brook age 1+= 13 Whitefish age 1+= 30
A notable decline in whitefish and
increase in rainbows.
